How many years do you need for permanent residence in Denmark?

You need at least 8 years of continuous legal residence in Denmark. You can apply after 4 years if you meet all four supplementary conditions below.

The two routes

8 years of residence: you must meet at least 2 of the 4 supplementary conditions.
4 years of residence, but less than 8: you must meet all 4.

Everything else, such as the Danish test, work, debt and public assistance, applies on both routes.

The four supplementary conditions

Passed Prøve i Dansk 3 or higher.
At least 4 years of work within the last 4 years and 6 months.
Passed medborgerskabsprøven (the active citizenship test), or at least 1 year of active citizenship, such as board work, coaching or documented volunteering.
An average annual taxable income of at least DKK 346,155.57 over the last 2 years.

When the count starts

If you applied for your first residence permit from abroad, the count starts on the date you were registered in the Danish CPR register after arriving.
If you applied while you were in Denmark, the count starts on the date of the first application that led to a permit.

The requirements are assessed on the day of the decision, not the day you apply, so the count keeps running while the case is processed.

Pensioners

With at least 8 years of residence you need 1 of the 2 remaining supplementary conditions: active citizenship or Prøve i Dansk 3.
With 4 to under 8 years you need both.

This applies if you have reached the state pension age or have been granted førtidspension, seniorpension or tidlig pension.

What makes it complicated

Stays abroad beyond holidays can interrupt the count.
A permit that expired before you applied for a new one can restart the count.
A new permit based on a new marriage or relationship can also restart it.

This is where people most often count wrong, because the interruption is not always obvious from the permit itself.
